CHOOSING THE PERFECT SECTIONAL FOR YOUR ROOM

Let’s discuss what is perhaps the most challenging furniture purchase imaginable: the sectional. If you’ve ever stood in your empty living room struggling to visualize the perfect furniture to fill it up, you are not alone! Sectionals take up a lot of space and can drastically impact a room, which consequently makes them a daunting endeavor to even the most experienced designer. The best way to overcome “sectional stress” is to simplify the entire process. Forget about size, design details, all of that stuff…for now. (Obviously, you will need to measure at some point, but this doesn’t have to be the first step.) Before anything else, you may want to consider what you want your dream sectional to accomplish in your room. If you’re not sure what we mean, read on. In this article, we will provide examples of different roles sectionals can play in any given space. Hopefully, one of these will resonate with you and give you the inspiration you need to sectional shop with complete confidence!

WHAT IS THE MAIN ROLE OF YOUR SECTIONAL?

Focal Point Surrounder

One of the most popular functions of a sectional is to provide a “gathering” space around a certain focal point such as a fireplace or television. If this is the main goal for your dream sectional, then you may want to consider every seat in respect to that focal point and let that influence your option choices. For example, if you are trying to provide ideal seating to watch tv, you probably want the bulk of the sectional facing the tv head on.

Cozy Escape

Perhaps your primary sectional goal is cozy and comfortable, tucked away in a small corner. This is the perfect opportunity to consider adding a lounge piece or a chaise for optimal comfort. This role is also ideal if you’re not exactly wanting your sectional to be the “star” of the room, but more like a favorite accessory.

Conversation Promoter

When it comes to daydreaming of your perfect sectional, don’t be afraid to think outside the box – literally. While “L” shapes and 90° angles are most common in the sectional world, curves could be exactly what you want for your particular space. A curved sectional promotes conversation by allowing people to better face one another and just feel closer in general, much like a round table in a dining area. Speaking of round, curved conversation pieces pair very nicely with round ottomans and coffee tables. Additionally, curves can sometimes appear more aesthetically pleasing in certain rooms.

Ample Seating

If you have a large family or entertain frequently at your home, the main goal of your sectional may be to provide plenty of seating for everyone. In this case, curved corner wedges are nice as they provide extra foot space instead of closing someone into a corner. Vast sectionals tend to be the star of a room, so you want to make sure you style them accordingly.

Room Divider

My personal favorite function for a sectional is to break up a large room or basically establish a certain area, such as the living room. With open floor plans gaining popularity, there is no better way to create physical boundaries than with furniture. Unlike a wall, a sectional still allows the room to be open, but with much more flexibility. Also, accent tables look great pushed up against the back of a sectional that divides a room.

•THE TAKEAWAY•

We know that shopping for sectionals can be super intimidating, but we have found that identifying the main role you want your sectional to play really helps provide direction in your decisions. Often times, sectionals will function in multiple ways, so don’t feel like you have to choose just one role. However, it does help to think about which role is most important to you in the space you have. This helps you narrow down the overall shape and size of your dream sectional. When it comes to measurements and details, we suggest purchasing from a company that will work with you on customizations so you can have the exact size and feel you’re looking for in each piece. We hope this article has provided you with some new ideas and inspiration. Happy sectional shopping!
